Krames StayWell and 3M Partner to Integrate Patient Education Content with Health IT Systems

YARDLEY, Pa.–()–Krames
and 3M
Health Information Systems
have announced an agreement to encode
Krames StayWell’s award-winning patient education library using the 3M
Healthcare Data Dictionary (3M HDD), a controlled medical vocabulary
server that translates and integrates data from diverse systems into a
standard, meaningful language. Krames StayWell’s multimedia consumer
health content, comprised of more than 12,000 articles, videos, and
other assets, will be individually mapped to over 20 healthcare
terminologies in the 3M HDD, including ICD-10-CM, SNOMED, CPT, NDC, and
LOINC. Upon completion, Krames
StayWell content
will be more easily integrated and interoperable
with virtually any healthcare information technology (HIT) system.

“Before computerized healthcare data can be put to work, it must be
concretely defined and consistently translated, giving the data both
context and meaning,” said Anthony Carrozzella, Business Director,
Clinical Terminology for 3M Health Information Systems. “We’re excited
to be working with Krames StayWell on expanding the reach of their
extensive patient education content so that clinical data can be better
understood and acted upon by patients.”

Dave Bennett, Chief Technology Officer at Krames StayWell added, “For
us, this is a game changer. For years we’ve licensed content that can
only be accessed via disparate systems, be it an EHR or content
management system. The 3M HDD not only defines and translates every data
element and healthcare concept that occurs in the EHR, it also includes
the contextual logic for true, extensive interoperability. This will
allow us to provide the appropriate patient-centric intelligence
directly at the point of care and at any touch point along the care
continuum. Our agreement with 3M aligns with Krames StayWell’s vision of
transforming healthcare communication.”

Once encoded by the 3M HDD, Krames StayWell content will have the
flexibility to assist HIT vendors, Hospitals, and Eligible Providers
meet future Stage 2 and Stage 3 requirements of Meaningful Use
addressing the Patient and Family Engagement Pillar of Meaningful Use.
Additionally, bringing consumer health information into the health IT
infrastructure will facilitate development of patient health
self-management solutions, essential to achieving improved outcomes and
lower costs at the core of healthcare reform.
